What happens at a first consultation

The first visit is an assessment, not a decision. It starts with how the problem began: whether there was a specific injury, what movement provokes the pain, whether the joint has given way or locked, and what has already been tried.

That is followed by an examination of the joint and, where it is needed, imaging. An X-ray shows bone and joint space. An MRI shows ligament, cartilage and tendon, and is the scan that settles most soft tissue questions. If you already have films or reports, bring them — a repeat scan is an avoidable cost.

You will leave with a diagnosis explained in plain language, the options set out including the non-surgical ones, and a plan. Surgery is discussed only where it is clinically indicated, and nothing is decided in the same breath as it is proposed.

For severe pain, a suspected fracture, a joint you cannot move, or an injury with numbness or loss of circulation, go to the nearest hospital rather than waiting for an appointment.
